I don’t work alone

Rembrandt 1

Now that I’ve invited you into my studio
where my most delicate work is on display
where even a brush with the tip of your scarf
might bring something, shattered,
to the floor at your feet
I must remind myself I asked for help with this.
I know that I would never finish it
without you.

So here you are at work.

It’s nearly done. Almost everything I want to say,
it says.

Please forgive me if sometimes I get nervous
and yes, I’ll admit it, even a bit jealous
watching you smoothing an edge here,
changing a word there.
